University of Bedfordshire — End-of-Life Care Experiences
Research at the University of Bedfordshire is exploring the experiences of Eastern European migrants accessing end-of-life care in the UK, shining a light on cultural, linguistic and systemic barriers that can shape how individuals and families engage with palliative services.
The study examines communication challenges, trust in healthcare providers, awareness of available support, and the role of cultural expectations around death, dying and caregiving.
Findings highlight that language barriers and limited familiarity with UK healthcare systems can delay engagement with services, while cultural stigma surrounding death can affect willingness to seek support. The research also considers how healthcare providers can adapt practice to better accommodate diverse needs — from translation provision to culturally sensitive care planning.
By elevating underrepresented voices, the project is contributing to more inclusive healthcare design and improved patient dignity at the end of life. It demonstrates how socially embedded research can inform national conversations about equity, access and compassionate care, ensuring services evolve in step with changing population demographics.
