Liverpool John Moores University — Global Centre for Maritime Innovation
Liverpool John Moores University has launched the Global Centre for Maritime Innovation (GCMI), an interdisciplinary research and industry collaboration hub advancing sustainable, technological and policy-led innovation across the global maritime sector.
Building on LJMU’s long-standing maritime heritage — dating back to the UK’s first nautical school — the Centre brings together expertise in maritime science, engineering, logistics, safety and governance within a single collaborative platform. (ljmu.ac.uk)
The maritime sector is one of the UK’s largest industries, worth £116bn and responsible for carrying around 95% of the nation’s global trade. Against this backdrop, the Centre addresses complex challenges facing shipping and ocean economies through innovation-led research and cross-sector partnership working.
Core research themes include maritime decarbonisation, alternative fuels and low-emission propulsion; autonomous vessel technologies; port innovation and logistics systems; ocean governance; and workforce skills development for a rapidly evolving maritime economy.
By bringing together academia, industry and policymakers, the Centre strengthens collaboration while ensuring research aligns with real-world sector needs. It also supports research-informed teaching, equipping students with advanced technical and policy knowledge for future maritime careers.
