University of East London — Muslim Women and the Cost-of-Living Crisis

Research at the University of East London has revealed how the cost-of-living crisis is disproportionately affecting Muslim women, highlighting structural inequalities across employment, financial security, housing and personal safety.

The study draws on lived experience to examine how economic pressures intersect with discrimination, caring responsibilities and labour market barriers.

Findings show that Muslim women are more likely to face insecure work, reduced income stability and heightened vulnerability to financial hardship. The research also explores how these pressures affect wellbeing, social participation and access to support services.

By working with community partners, advocacy organisations and policymakers, the project is already informing targeted interventions and equality-focused policy responses. It demonstrates the vital role universities play in surfacing hidden inequalities and shaping socially responsive policy agendas.
