University of Bedfordshire — Exploitation and Neurodivergence
Research at the University of Bedfordshire has identified critical gaps in safeguarding systems for neurodivergent young women and girls affected by sexual exploitation.
The study examines how overlapping vulnerabilities — including autism, learning differences and mental health conditions — can limit recognition, protection and access to appropriate support services.
Researchers found that existing safeguarding frameworks often fail to account for neurodivergent communication styles, behavioural responses and trust dynamics, increasing the risk that exploitation goes unnoticed or inadequately addressed. The findings are informing improvements across policing, social care and third-sector support provision.
By centring lived experience and practitioner insight, the project is helping reshape safeguarding policy and frontline intervention models. It demonstrates how socially focused university research can directly improve protection systems for vulnerable groups.
