Out on the ocean blue - Southampton Solent University

06 May 2016

Both the FdSc Maritime Operations and FdEng Marine Engineering are examples of long running programmes that meet the needs of a specific sector. Designed in partnership with the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB), representing maritime businesses, and the Marine and Coastguard Agency (MCA) who determine professional seafaring certification, the majority of officer cadets are sponsored by shipping companies or organisations.

To become an officer in the Merchant Navy an officer cadet training scheme must be completed, combining academic education and periods of practical training at sea. The programmes are a direct pathway to either the BSc (Hons) Marine Operations Management or BEng (Hons) Marine Engineering and Management.

“In the space of four years I have been around the world twice.  I have hosted the Captain’s table on Queen Mary 2 and met royalty, celebrities and some of the most interesting people who travel with us.  I am responsible for driving a £500 million ship carrying over 2,500 passengers and 1,000 crew”.
Christopher, Third Officer
