MillionPlus welcomes planned revisions to REF2028

15 Jun 2023

MillionPlus, the Association for Modern Universities, has today (15 June) welcomed Research England’s announcement on their planned revisions to the Research Exercise Framework 2028.

Rachel Hewitt, Chief Executive of MillionPlus, said:

“I welcome today’s announcement from Research England, setting out the future of the research assessment programme. The changes to REF2028, including a greater focus on the research environment and a broader focus on how research contributes to knowledge, understanding and impact, offers a great opportunity to show the full range of research excellence undertaken by all universities across the UK. Modern universities play a key role in delivering the innovative, applied and translational research which is vital for the UK to be seen as global leader and this was recognised by their strong performance in REF2021. MillionPlus looks forward to working with Research England through the upcoming consultation phase of the next REF.”

  • What are modern universities? Modern universities are long established centres of higher education in their communities with roots that stretch back decades, if not centuries. Many gained university title following legislation agreed by parliament in 1992. They make up almost half of the UK university sector with over a million students studying at modern universities every year.
