MillionPlus comment on HEPI’s England Social Mobility Index report

04 Mar 2021

MillionPlus, the Association for Modern Universities, has today (4 March) commented on the Higher Education Policy Institute’s report, Designing an English Social Mobility Index, authored by London South Bank University Vice-Chancellor Professor David Phoenix.

Dr Greg Walker, Chief Executive of MillionPlus, said:

“This valuable report represents an important contribution to the conversation on higher education in England, clearly demonstrating the role of modern universities in making real improvements in social mobility. Research such as this emphasises the broader contribution of higher education to individuals and communities than graduate salary returns alone.

“Social mobility is a fundamental part of any genuine levelling up agenda in the UK, and in this way this new research is both salutary and timely.”

  3. What are modern universities? Modern universities are long established centres of higher education in their communities with roots that stretch back decades, if not centuries. Many gained university title following legislation agreed by parliament in 1992. They make up almost half of the UK university sector with over a million students studying at modern universities every year.
