MillionPlus CEO writes for THE – Augar’s perception of a golden age reveals his short-sightedness
Following the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee's evidence session with the Chair of the Independent Panel that undertook the Post-18 Education and Funding review, Dr Greg Walker, argues that the comments made by Philip Augar, specifically his perception of a 'windfall' era for universities since 2012 reveals a concerning lack of understanding of Higher Education sector. Dr Augar fails to take into account the differential impact of the marketisation of HE in 2012 and new providers entering the market, £3bn cut in Teaching grant per year, tightening of international student recruitment and demographic changes but to name just a few. That sense is compounded by Augar’s striking admission in the evidence session that the review panel failed to model the impact of their funding recommendations on HE providers themselves.
