University of the West of Scotland — AI Misuse Detection

Researchers at the University of the West of Scotland are developing the first system designed to detect academic misuse of artificial intelligence tools.

As generative AI becomes more sophisticated, the project addresses growing concerns around plagiarism, assessment integrity and ethical use of technology in education.

The system analyses writing patterns, content generation markers and contextual indicators to identify where AI may have been used inappropriately. Its development supports universities in maintaining academic standards while adapting assessment design for the digital age.

Beyond higher education, the technology has potential applications in publishing, professional accreditation and content verification. It demonstrates how universities are not only responding to technological change but actively shaping governance and ethical frameworks around AI use.
