million+ welcomes Lord Mandelson’s commitment that there should be no cap on talent in the UK

The university think tank million+ warmly welcomed a speech by Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton this afternoon (Monday 28 September).

Professor Les Ebdon, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire and Chair of million+ said, “I warmly welcome Lord Mandelson’s statement that every person who is capable should get the chance to go to university, get an apprenticeship or a new skill. This is an important commitment from Labour and the Government is absolutely right to dismiss all those pessimists who suggest that more university students means worse. People with university degrees and skills do earn more, and so create more value for their families, the economy and society. We must now have a commitment that everyone who wants to go to university is funded to do so in 2010.”
