million+ comment on Lib Dem Fees Announcement
Responding to the announcement by Nick Clegg, that the Lib Dems have developed a plan to phase out university tuition fees, Pam Tatlow, Chief Executive of the university think tank million+ said: “It is important that all political parties clarify their positions on university fees and funding before the general election. However, universities, students and graduates will want to know the full details of these proposals to be sure that they stand up financially. Alongside these proposals, Mr Clegg and the Liberal Democrats must also make clear that they are committed to widening participation and to funding additional student numbers so that all those who are qualified are guaranteed a place at university.
“In recent months Nick Clegg and Vince Cable have failed to give a firm commitment to expanding student numbers. Today’s pledge is only part of the picture – it’s important that the Liberal Democrats give students and potential students the other guarantees they need.”
