Launch of University think-tank Million+

Million+, the university think-tank that works to solve complex problems in higher education, is launched today.

Originally known as CMU, the Coalition of Modern Universities, the organisation represents almost 30 leading universities in the UK. Together they educate over half the UK’s graduates, and have a unique focus on the needs of students.

The name change follows a review with stakeholders, which led to a strategic review and a new brand strategy.

Background to Million+ and the changes

Million+

…who we are
We are a university think-tank. This means we work to help solve complex problems in higher education and to ensure that policy reflects the potential of the UK’s world-class university system.

We will do this by:

Million+

…our influence
We are a major force in higher education. Our students and graduates are entrepreneurs, business people, artists, scientists, engineers, teachers and the health and care professionals who are building a modern world. They are all ages, races and backgrounds. They represent the dynamism and diversity of modern society and they study and work in the UK and in countries throughout the world.

Our member institutions pride themselves on diversity, flexibility and opportunity: each has its own specialties, qualities and principles, but together they provide a network of institutions that truly promote aspiration, excellence and innovation.

Million+

…our new focus
We were the Coalition of Modern Universities and were later known as CMU, ‘campaigning for mainstream universities’. We consulted with our universities and other stakeholders. They wanted us to do more and to do it differently. This is why we are changing our focus and our name.

We chose Million+ because:

Professor Les Ebdon, Chair of Million+, says: “We’re a vital part of Britain’s economy. We provide the education and research that keep business and public services going, and help everyone reach their potential.”

Sadiq Khan MP says “As a graduate of North London (now part of London Metropolitan) University, I am delighted to host the launch of Million+. They have a fantastic agenda relevant to today’s world. They change the lives of millions of people like me through the opportunities, the education and the research which they provide.”

Gemma Tumelty President of the National Union of Students says “Million+ has been hugely successful in delivering diversity, quality and relevant research. This exciting new direction will enable the sharing of innovative ideas, evidence and best practice to encourage everyone to reach their educational potential. NUS looks forward to working with Million+ to the benefit of current and prospective students.”

Million+ was launched at a Reception near the Houses of Parliament by Secretary of State for DIUS John Denham MP who was joined by David Willetts MP, Sarah Teather MP and Gemma Tumelty, President NUS on 14 November 2007. The event was hosted by Professor Les Ebdon, Chair of Million+ and Sadiq Khan MP.
