International students are not being recruited as a 'cover-up'

Refuting comments by Martin Davidson, at the British Council’s Going Global Conference, Pam Tatlow, Chief Executive of the university think-tank million+, said: “It is completely inaccurate to imply that UK universities are recruiting more international students in an attempt to cover-up for reductions in higher education in the UK. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alastair Darling has announced that over £300 million extra funding will be available to universities in 2010 and 20,000 more students will be able to commence courses in England. Record numbers of students are being funded at the same time as the science and innovation budget has been ring-fenced.”

“As the million+ report ‘Universities and International Higher Education Partnerships’ confirms, UK Universities have been developing a wide variety of international partnerships which are of mutual benefit to institutions and students in the UK and internationally. This is the future of the international higher education agenda in the global economy and modern universities in particular have played a leading role in developing this more co-operative approach.”
