million+ comment on House of Lords Higher Education in Europe report
Commenting on a report by the House of Lords Social Policies and Consumer Protection EU Sub-Committee The Modernisation of Higher Education, published today (Thursday), Pam Tatlow, Chief Executive of the university think-tank million+, said: “We welcome the Committee’s recognition that higher education should be at the heart of the growth agenda both in Britain and the EU. The Committee’s support for the Erasmus programme and the Bologna Process is also important and should be backed with funding and commitment from Ministers. Modern universities have been highly successful in winning research contracts and in developing collaborations with European universities and the Government needs to do more to encourage students exchanges and mobility.”

- Professor Les Ebdon, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire and former Chair of million+, gave oral evidence to the Committee Inquiry on 19 January 2012. He outlined the disadvantages of EU proposals to create a new multi-ranking tool for universities which the Committee has rightly concluded would bring no positive advantages at the present time. Professor Ebdon also pointed out the significant challenges that still remain in both schools and universities in encouraging students to study another language, something that has been echoed by the Committee. The transcript of the oral evidence given by Professor Ebdon can be viewed here.
