Recruitment and retention of teachers, Adjournment debate 18 June 2015

18 Jun 2015

An Adjournment debate on Teacher Recruitment and Retention will take place in the main Chamber at the close of business on Thursday 18 June, following Day 2 of the Committee of the Whole House on the EU Referendum Bill. million+ has long focused on the issues around recruitment of training teachers and continuing professional development of teaching staff. In March 2015 we published a Manifesto for Teacher Education.

We argue that the role of universities in supporting teacher recruitment, professional development and retention should be recognised and valued. Universities have a key role to play in offering initial teacher education courses in their own right and not just as a supporter of the School Direct programme which has under-recruited every year since 2011. Ministers need to review the strategy with a view to taking a more balanced approach.
