Creating global communities: UWS visits UW-P

24 Mar 2017

University of the West of Scotland (UWS) colleagues and students engaged in a week-long overseas exchange with the University of Wisconsin Platteville (UW-P) in the US.

The University, which received funding for the trip from the Scottish Government under its Saltire Scholarships for Outward Mobility Fund is committed to extending the possibilities for overseas exchange opportunities for its students.

UWS has strong links with the UW-P, which is one of America's leading regional universities. The trip enabled a group of the University’s Applied Bioscience and Zoology and Sports students to visit Wisconsin Platteville and participate in classes with US students, experience HE provision in the USA, and gain a greater understanding of any differences that exist.

The Zoology students undertook field work and animal identification with their US counterparts while the Sports students were involved in physiological testing and sports-related experiments. The trip was led by Dr Richard Thacker, Programme Leader of Applied Bioscience and Zoology, along with Laura Graham, Programme Leader of Sport Development.

Dr Thacker said:

"This was a fantastic opportunity for the students involved. We now hope to build on this work and sign a formal agreement for on-going staff and student exchange with UW-Platteville."
