MillionPlus comment on the HEPI/Unite Students Reality Check report

04 Jul 2017

MillionPlus, the Association for Modern Universities, has today (4 July) commented on the HEPI/Unite Students Reality Check report, which highlights a gap between what applicants think university will be like and their experiences as students.

Pam Tatlow, Chief Executive of MillionPlus, said:

“This research usefully identifies the differences between the expectations of applicants and the reality of life as a student and its findings will help to inform both universities and student unions.

“Modern universities are keenly aware that younger students from less advantaged backgrounds are not always as confident in their early weeks at university as those who have had more opportunities to build-up social and cultural capital before starting their courses.

“These universities invest much time and resource to deliver a holistic approach to applicants and students and ensure that they are supported not only academically, but also personally, during the transition. This is one reason why modern universities are highly successful in promoting social mobility and providing opportunities to study for a degree to students from a wide range of backgrounds.”
