Drama graduates selected for national festival

Three BA (Hons) Drama graduates have been chosen to be one of only 12 performances to be showcased at the National Students Drama Festival (NSDF) in Scarborough, which starts this weekend.

Electric Shadows, a Northampton based theatre company, comprises of Ashleigh Griffith, Jack Conway and Xanthe Palmer, who all graduated from The University of Northampton in 2008/2009, and Anthony Neylon who is currently in his second year at the University studying BA Acting. Out of hundreds of applicants for the festival, they are thrilled to have been selected to take part. Ashleigh explains further:

“It may seem like a very specific and personal achievement but the schools who traditionally perform at this festival are the big theatre schools or ‘older’ universities as such. This proves that The University of Northampton and its Drama provision is a major player in the competitive world of performance schooling.

“We are so excited to be going there and it’s a great opportunity to promote our company, as well as Northampton.”

Electric Shadows will be performing a piece entitled Guidelines for Measures to Cope, one of their University final year performance pieces about Body Dysmorphic Disorder. The piece is inspired by real stories and the company hope that the festival will be a useful platform to raise awareness of the disorder.

The BA Drama course team, School of The Arts, The University of Northampton, commented:

“We are delighted that the graduates have followed up on the experiences of their Year 3 modules and applied these to formation and management of their own company, Electric Shadows. We are very proud of their achievements and wish Electric Shadows many years of creative engagement in Performance.”

The National Student Drama Festival, sponsored by The Sunday Times, runs from 27 March – 2 April 2010. Further information is available from: http://nsdf.org.uk/
