Bath Spa University Students to Perform at International Theatre Festival
Eight Drama, Performing Arts and Dance students from Bath Spa University have been invited to perform at the prestigious International Next Wave Festival in Montreal next April.
Featuring delegations from 25 different countries, the Festival celebrates the work of amateur and student performers and will provide a wonderful opportunity for the Bath Spa University students to showcase their best theatre work to people from across the globe. They will also take part in workshops and share ideas with the Festival’s 250 other international participants.
The students will be performing their own production, Red Room, at the Festival, from 21 to 25 April. It is based on Angela Carter’s short story The Bloody Chamber and takes inspiration from the murderous tale of Bluebeard. The show combines the atmosphere of film noir with a girl’s dramatic coming of age and, in order to make it particularly suitable for an international audience, will be highly visual.
Bath Spa’s students were invited to Canada after being spotted at the International University Theatre Association’s festival in Belgium in February 2009.
Alongside preparations for the production, these multi-talented students are also busy raising funds for their travel expenses. They have so far raised £800 through a cabaret show and music marathon and need to gather a further £3,500 to reach their target.
Red Room will be performed at Bath Spa’s University Theatre on 11 and 12 February, at 7.30 pm, before the students travel to Canada. Tickets cost £10 (£8 concessions). See www.bathspalive.com for further details and to buy tickets.
